Bravo! in Action

Tashna Morgan is an environmental scientist at Jamalco's alumina refinery in Clarendon,
Jamaica. She is also a Bravo! volunteer.
Each week after work and on weekends, she spends several hours reading textbooks, or recording material on tape, for visually impaired students at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).
"Apart from reading, I assist with assignments by formatting their course work, doing research, searching for references, and so on," says Morgan.
Morgan values the contribution she is making to people who want to have an education but may be limited in doing it, and she finds it helps her, too.
"Learning about other disciplines, such as psychology and theology, is also an advantage," she says.
Morgan began reading to visually impaired students after she saw a poster seeking volunteers while still a student herself at UWI. She thought "why not?" and was soon reading for Vivian "Bruce" Blake, a social work student who has since graduated and is back at UWI doing an advance diploma in education.
After graduating in 2003, Morgan worked on the Mona campus and continued reading until she took a short break in 2004, but resumed in 2005. When she joined Jamalco, becoming a Bravo! volunteer was a natural progression.
The Alcoa Foundation Bravo! program recognizes Alcoa employees by providing grants to the charitable organizations where they perform at least 50 hours of community service during a calendar year. Employees may apply for one US$250 grant per year.
