Germany - 2006
Boiler Technology Increases Energy Efficiency

An energy efficiency project to improve the largest boiler at Alcoa Fastening Systems' Hildesheim, Germany, location exceeded its goals, reducing energy consumption by 45.78%.

Hildesheim uses natural gas for its heating systems. The largest boiler, with a rating of 305 kilowatts, was installed in 1991. In response to rising energy prices, the location installed advanced technology that recirculates the boiler's gas to encourage complete, as opposed to partial, burning.

Initial estimates were for energy savings of up to 17.3%. A comparison of energy usage before and after the technology was installed in late 2004 indicates a 25.25% reduction. Given the plant's increased production figures, this represents an actual reduction of 45.78%. In addition, the project's original payback period of approximately 2.5 years was reduced to 6.5 months.
