Alain Belda issued the following Tuesday Letter on May 11, 1999, two days after he was installed as President and Chief Executive Officer:
In this letter, I will cover Values.
Values represent the foundation of the company without which the building that we are constructing together will crumble. So I want to make very clear my commitment to our values as well as my expectations for all.
Our values are universal. They require leadership and the integrity of our actions matching our words. The test is not the legal requirement. It is beyond that; it is about what is right. It is not about doing the minimum or working around the problems; it is about setting an example. It is not about complacency; it is about high individual and collective standards, about a high degree of personal and collective responsibility, and about going that extra distance that makes the difference.
We need to ensure ourselves in our everyday actions that we do not accept or tolerate ambiguity when dealing with these subjects. It leads to uncertainty, speculation, lack of trust, and frustration, all of which are non-productive uses of people's energy that get us into problems.
When in doubt, take the high road; and do not take away from top management and me the obligation to make tough decisions. Bring the subjects up; use the different communication means available to all: letters, E-mails and the Compliance Line.
