Alcoa Foundation Launches with New Focus Areas, New Leadership

NEW YORK, NY Nov. 1, 2016 –Alcoa Corporation today announced that a new, non-profit foundation has been created to focus on sustainable development in communities where the global company has operations.

The new Alcoa Foundation will be led by Rosa García Pineiro. She most recently served as V.P. for Global Sustainability for Alcoa Inc., which separated on November 1 into two publicly traded companies - Alcoa Corporation and Arconic.

With the Alcoa Inc. separation complete, the assets of the former Alcoa Foundation, now known as Legacy Alcoa Foundation, were divided into two separate, non-profit foundations, Arconic Foundation and Alcoa Foundation.

“Alcoa Corporation operates with a strong values-based culture that works to minimize its environmental footprint while returning positive results to society,” said García Pineiro, who will also lead sustainability efforts for Alcoa Corporation. “The Foundation is ready to support research programs and initiatives that preserve biodiversity, particularly as it relates to mining and refining activities, and in programs and research aimed at mitigating climate change.”

García Pineiro served with Alcoa Inc. for 17 years and also served on the board of directors for Legacy Alcoa Foundation. She holds a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from University of Vigo (Spain), a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Escuela de Organización Industrial – University of Madrid (Spain), an Executive MBA from the Haute École de Comerce – University of Geneva (Switzerland), and a master’s degree in Commodity Training at the Geneva School of Business (Switzerland). Of Spanish nationality, García Pineiro speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.

The new Alcoa Foundation will continue in the tradition of partnering with nonprofit organizations around the globe where Alcoa Corporation has a presence. It will make grants that contribute to environmental excellence, focusing on two key areas: climate change prevention and biodiversity conservation.

Over the coming year, Alcoa Foundation will support World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in its efforts to address the impacts of climate change on communities and biodiversity.

Dr. Nikhil Advani, senior program officer with WWF, said Alcoa Foundation will help the organization gain data that will advance knowledge on how human responses to climate change impact biodiversity. With this information, conservation strategies will be developed, including outreach and educational materials. The program will address the impacts of climate change around the world, including in countries where Alcoa Corporation has operating locations, such as southwestern Australia, Brazil, Iceland and Norway.

“This grant from Alcoa Foundation allows us to take this emerging body of work to scale and implement solutions that help wildlife and communities adapt to a changing climate,” said Advani, who spearheads the organization’s work on climate, communities and biodiversity.

About Alcoa Foundation
Alcoa Foundation’s predecessor, currently known as Legacy Alcoa Foundation (and formerly known as Alcoa Foundation), was founded in 1952 as one of the few endowed corporate foundations in the United States. As a result of the separation of Alcoa Inc into Alcoa Corporation and Arconic Inc. in November 2016, two new foundations were formed, into which the assets of Legacy Alcoa Foundation were transferred.  One of the newly formed foundations, known now as Alcoa Foundation, is the foundation associated with Alcoa Corporation.  Today, Alcoa Foundation invests where Alcoa Corporation has a presence, providing grants that contribute to environmental excellence around the world, particularly in the areas of biodiversity conservation and climate change research.
