Alcoa publishes updated master plan for Anglesea freehold land

Alcoa of Australia (Alcoa) has published a revised Concept Master Plan for the proposed transformation of its freehold landholdings in Anglesea.

The Alcoa Freehold Concept Master Plan aims to unlock the potential for Alcoa’s freehold landholdings for Anglesea and the region by connecting people to the community’s valued landscapes and creating a new tourism destination and economic opportunities.

The plan is informed by a range of inputs including broad community consultation, consideration of the site’s natural attributes and histories, future economic opportunities for Anglesea and the wider region, and key planning documents including the Anglesea Futures Draft Land Use Plan and the Anglesea Structure Plan.

Alcoa Site Asset Manager Warren Sharp said the revised Concept Master Plan incorporated feedback from community consultation involving more than 2,700 interactions with people including fulltime and semi-permanent residents, community representatives and visitors to Anglesea undertaken in January to March this year.

“A diversity of opinions were expressed during the consultation, with participants commenting on the range of environmental, economic and community opportunities related to the proposed land uses outlined in the draft plan,” Mr Sharp said.

“There was a strong view that the ‘Anglesea character’, defined by the town’s environmental attributes and coastal village feel, is deeply valued and I am confident we have successfully reflected the community’s desire for this to be maintained into the future.”

The revised plan addresses requests for more detailed information on the style of proposed developments, as well as the proposed implementation framework and phasing to deliver the project. This includes information how Alcoa can ensure the Concept Master Plan vision is deliverable in the future, even if at some point, Alcoa is no longer the landholder.

“Alcoa extends its sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the consultation on the plan and looks forward to ongoing engagement with the Anglesea community,” Mr Sharp said.

The plan has been submitted to the Anglesea Futures consultation process. The plan, together with a report summarising the recent phase of community engagement can be downloaded from engage-anglesea.alcoa.com.au.

Background

In March 2016 Alcoa launched a four-phase community consultation process to better understand community and key stakeholder views about the future use of the former power station and mine site.

Following community consultation to develop five Guiding Principles for the site, Alcoa released the draft Alcoa Freehold Concept Master Plan in January 2018  for further community input. Feedback gathered from community and key stakeholders provided additional input into the Alcoa Freehold Concept Master Plan published in March 2018.

The four-phased community consultation program undertaken since March 2016 has generated over 6,000 community contacts across 14 events and more than 2,000 comments and submissions.
