WA Artist Takes Out Iconic Aluminium Sculpture Subsidy at Sculpture by the Sea

Perth-based artist Stuart Green has been announced as the recipient of the 2018 Alcoa Iconic Aluminium Sculpture Subsidy at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe.

Stuart’s sculpture, (b)RAIN, showcases aluminium in a chaotic assembly of cloud structures, reflecting electrical storms both overhead and within one’s head; like a rainstorm and a brainstorm.

Visitors to Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe might be familiar with Stuart’s works at Elizabeth Quay, Perth Children’s Hospital and Railway Square Midlands. He is also completing an installation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Alcoa of Australia (Alcoa) is a founding sponsor and major partner of Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, which runs from March 2 to 19 at Perth’s idyllic Cottesloe Beach.

Other elements of Alcoa’s support include material subsidies to artists working in aluminium. Over 14 years, more than 50 artists have received subsidies to help reduce costs and encourage participation in the exhibition. This year’s recipients are Stuart Green along with Jon Denaro and Luke Davey who partnered to create Obscure View.

Alcoa is also the main supporter of the Alcoa Schools Education Program, which provides students from kindergarten to Year 12 with artistic workshops and direct access to exhibiting artists. The program is set to welcome its 25,000^th student this year – a testimony to the program’s success and reach since commencing 14 years ago.

Alcoa’s President Alcoa Bauxite Garret Dixon said the company was extremely proud of its partnership with the free, world-class community arts event.

“This is Perth’s most loved beachside event which allows people from all walks of life to take in the creativity, skill and craftsmanship of more than 75 Australian and international artists,” Mr Dixon said.

“As a founding partner of the Alcoa Schools Education Program, we also enjoy providing some 2500 primary and secondary students with a unique exhibition experience each year which sees them meet artists, learn about the creative process and make their own masterpieces using aluminium.”
