Scitech and Alcoa investing in maths education
The Scitech-Alcoa partnership is delivering the Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program for a further three years in the Peel region, this year working with North Dandalup, Dwellingup, St Joseph’s Waroona, and Carcoola primary schools.
More than 3,000 teachers, students and parents have taken part in the Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program since it began in 2012.
The program aims to accelerate teacher capacity, confidence and leadership with mathematics, and boost student performance.
Students involved in the program have reported a 28 per cent increase in their interest in maths, and 20 per cent increase in confidence and enjoyment during maths lessons.
“The Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program aims to use the three-way learning relationship between teachers, students and parents to make the transition from basic numeracy to more complicated concepts easier,” said Scitech CEO Alan Brien.
“Maths is an important part of so many things in everyday life – from driving a car to planning a budget or analysing a football game. This program provides the tools for teachers and parents to meet students’ needs and expectations, and challenge those students with a desire to learn more,” he said.
Alcoa of Australia Chairman and Managing Director Michael Parker said, “We need to spark an early interest in mathematics and other STEM subjects if we are going to create a strong pipeline of people pursuing STEM related professions.”
“The Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program helps achieve this by developing the confidence of year four and five educators to teach maths,” he said.
The program kicked off in early April with parent information sessions at all four schools, introducing parents and teachers to the program goals and providing resources to supplement their child’s maths lessons at home.
