Alcoa welcomes Western Trade Coast Protection Area legislation proposal
Alcoa welcomes the State Government’s proposed legislation to formalise a Protection Area around the Western Trade Coast industrial area.
The legislation is an important planning tool that will help protect the state’s valuable Kwinana industrial assets that provide employment for thousands of Western Australians, and avoid future land-use conflicts.
Alcoa supports compatible, non-sensitive land-uses around its operations. Residential encroachment poses a potential land-use conflict that needs to be avoided. This legislation will help provide much needed certainty for both industry and land owners about the appropriate use of land in the area.
The proposed Western Trade Coast Protection Area is based on the Kwinana Industrial (including Air Quality) Buffer boundary, which was endorsed by the Western Australian Planning Commission in 2010 following rigorous scientific investigation.
Alcoa believes the Western Trade Coast Protection Area should reflect this buffer without any deviation.
