Alcoa Foundation announced today that it has awarded grants worth $65,500 to North Carolina nonprofit organizations to provide workplace training, educate students and better protect the environment.

“After reviewing many grant applications, we decided to narrow our focus on helping children and adults through educational programs and activities,” said Mark Gross, Alcoa Badin Technical Manager. “The programs will help build a brighter future for people in this community.” Five of the seven Alcoa Foundation grants will benefit Stanly County, where Alcoa has operated since 1917. The 2011 grants include:
- The Resource Development Center (Albemarle): $15,000 grant for education/workforce training for citizens in need.
- Pfeiffer University School of Nursing (Misenheimer): $13,000 grant for education/workforce training in health care.
- Nazareth Children's Home (Salisbury): $10,000 grant to expand current educational programs to reach more children in need.
- West Badin Beautification (Badin): $18,500 grant to restore and enhance the West Badin Community Center, including funds to improve storefronts, purchase furniture and provide ongoing maintenance.
- Badin Volunteer Fire Department (Badin): $5,000 grant for fire safety services.
- Park Ridge Christian School (Albemarle): $2,500 grant to engage students in extra-curricular activities.
- Big Sweep (Statewide): $1,500 grant to support clean-up efforts across North Carolina waterways.
Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation have donated more than $4 million to North Carolina nonprofit organizations since 1990. “Alcoa is dedicated to the Badin community and the surrounding counties. We look forward to working with our nonprofit partners to make a positive difference in the area,” Gross said.
