PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 2006--Alcoa (NYSE:AA) today announced that its Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals affiliate has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Vietnam National Coal-Minerals Industries Group (VINACOMIN) where the parties will explore the feasibility of creating a joint venture to develop a bauxite mine and alumina refinery in the Dak Nong Province of Vietnam.

Alcoa has announced the signing of a Cooperation Agreement with Vietnam's premier minerals development company, Vietnam National Coal-Minerals Industries Group (Vinacomin), for cooperation and development of the aluminum industry in Vietnam.
Under the agreement, Alcoa's AWAC partnership (a global alliance between Alcoa and Alumina Ltd, with Alcoa holding 60 percent) will conduct due diligence on the acquisition of a 40 percent interest in the Nhan Co alumina refinery that is to be constructed in Dak Nong Province. In addition, Alcoa has partnered with Vinacomin to explore the feasibility of developing a bauxite mine and alumina refinery, also in Dak Nong Province.

The proposed alumina refinery would be located in the Gia Nghia bauxite deposit area in Dak Nong Province, with first stage capacity between 1.0 and 1.5 million metric tons per year, and expansion opportunities from there. Bauxite in the region is among the highest quality in the world.
In developing this project, Alcoa is working in partnership with the People's Committee of Dak Nong. Alcoa is committed to economic, social and environmental advancement for the people in the Highlands. Alcoa will bring advanced mining and refining technology, and will also advance the achievement of the priorities set in Vietnam's National Strategy for Environmental Protection. We will bring advanced environmental expertise for mine site rehabilitation and refinery operation.
