About the Project
Alcoa's proposed smelter project in Cap-de-Ville will be the first modern pre-bake aluminium smelter in the Caribbean and the most advanced smelter within Alcoa's worldwide system. It will be fuelled by clean natural gas and will create a new, highly efficient power station that can add stability to the national electricity grid. It will attract and support a variety of local business and professional opportunities, rejuvenate the local economy, and make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the southwest and to Trinidad and Tobago in general.
Once operational, the smelter will employ around 800 people in stable, long-term, well-paying jobs and contribute approximately US$100 million to the Trinidad and Tobago economy annually. It will be a world-class facility designed to meet or outperform the stringent environment, health, and safety standards imposed by regulatory authorities on similar facilities in the U.S, Canada, Iceland, Australia, and Brazil. More information about the proposed project can be found at www.alcoa.com/trinidad_tobago.
