Alcoa Tennessee Operations, Knoxville Office Employees Take Action During Month of Global Volunteering

Alcoa, Tenn. -- This month, Alcoa employees across East Tennessee have joined their counterparts around the globe, as over 20,000 Alcoa employees make a difference during the company’s annual Worldwide Month of Service. Now in its fourth year, Alcoa’s Month of Service is a month-long event that mobilizes Alcoa’s global workforce to make a positive impact in their local communities, while also recognizing employees for their year-round volunteer efforts. Alcoa Tennessee Operations and Knoxville office employees will participate in volunteer events in support of education, health and human services, the environment and the arts. Their efforts are 15 of over 600 community projects taking place in Alcoa communities across 20 countries throughout October. Last October, 24% of Alcoa’s global workforce took part in 700 Month of Service around the world. They planted 20,000 trees, served 7,300 meals, restored 160 natural areas, repaired 270 community facilities and assisted students in 320 schools. This year, in spite of the challenging economic backdrop, the company expects these efforts to intensify – with a record 30% of its global workforce planning participation in what Alcoa believes will be its biggest Month of Service yet. “Alcoa’s Month of Service is an extension of our determination to add real value to everything we do – in the communities in which we live and within our operations,” said Chris Jackson, Alcoa Tennessee Operations Location Manager. “Through their volunteer efforts, Alcoa volunteers are applying and sharing Alcoa’s core strengths and values, for the benefit of local communities. These partnerships also reflect Alcoa’s commitment to conservation and sustainability – and our action to plant 10 Million Trees, to recycle, and to find solutions to global climate change.” Month of Service is the centerpiece of year-round volunteer efforts by Tennessee Operation and Knoxville office employees, who in 2008 donated more than 1,200 hours of volunteer service and earned $50,000 for local schools, parks and charities through Alcoa’s ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together in our Neighborhood) projects. Around the world Alcoa employees gave 705,000 hours of voluntary service last year – the equivalent of more than 350 people working full-time. Highlights of Alcoa’s upcoming 2009 October Worldwide Month of Service: In the United States, over 7,000 Alcoa employees are planning to help more than 400 local non-profit and community groups across the country – from building homes and renovating shelters, to improving literacy among school students, to serving meals, donating food, clothes and blankets.
