Alcoa Tennessee Operations
News From Tennessee Operations

August 28, 2009

Area non-profits receive donations from Alcoa Inc.

Three local charities are the beneficiaries of Alcoa Inc. employees’ good ideas.

During a recent luncheon to recognize innovative and “above and beyond” projects of Tennessee Operations’ employees, a total of $2,500 was presented to representatives from:

  • RIO Lighthouse Ministry - to provide meals to shut-ins and those in need
  • Douglas Cherokee – for their meals on wheels program
  • Hope for Today Cancer Support - to provide transportation and free meals for cancer patients

“There’s a critical need and it’s getting larger and larger by the week,” said Darrell Morris, RIO Lighthouse Ministry.  “We look up to Alcoa as a leader in this community through their efforts of giving back.  They have helped underprivileged in many ways and we thank them.”

The donations were made possible through Tennessee Operations’ suggestion system. Employees are encouraged to make suggestions on how to improve certain areas of business operation within the plant.  With every suggestion, Alcoa contributes $5 to the “community chest."

“We had the opportunity to write some checks - a direct result of our employees making suggestions for improvements,” said Chris Jackson, Alcoa Location Manager.  “This helps our employees understand and appreciate how they can contribute to the community and it also helps us continue to grow in terms of helping one another.”

Local organizations were nominated and selected for funding by Alcoa employees.  This year’s selection committee chose to concentrate on programs that provide basic needs, such as food, for our community members.
