Aluminum, Bears, and Trails…oh my!

Area nonprofits and Alcoa Inc. partner in Worldwide Month of Service events

Alcoa Worldwide Month of Service events will be held in over 200 Alcoa locations in more than 30 countries – including Tennessee Operations – and partner with local nonprofit organizations to make a real and lasting impact.  Alcoa's senior leadership will be personally involved.  Last year’s inaugural Month of Service had approximately 36,743 people involved—including more than 15,000 employees participating in 657 events at more than 200 locations in 36 countries.

Several service events and activities have been scheduled:

Entire month of October – Community Can Challenge.  Alcoa Inc.’s Tennessee Operations is issuing a one-month can challenge to the community that encourages as much aluminum recycling as possible during the month of October.  Recycling proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity in Blount County.  A recycling bin for public use will be displayed at Alcoa’s Rigid Packaging Division, located at 2300 North Wright Road, in the main parking lot.

Friday, Oct. 5 – Knoxville Zoological Gardens – Alcoa has donated several railroad ties to the Zoo for use in its exhibits. Volunteers in Alcoa’s downtown Knoxville office location will be dispersing the ties in the exhibits, along with a variety of other tasks including planting, painting, light carpentry construction in select zoo exhibits (most likely Gorilla Valley and Chimp Ridge).  Volunteers will work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 13 – Habitat for Humanity in Blount County.  Volunteers from Alcoa’s two Blount County manufacturing plants will be working on a Habitat house located at 142 W. Bell Street in Alcoa.  Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 30 – Stecoah Valley Center in Graham County, North Carolina.  Volunteers representing Alcoa’s four hydropower dams will restore an environmental nature trail for Stecoah Valley Center, a nonprofit organization that helps promote the preservation of Appalachian mountain culture.

All nonprofit organizations will be eligible for ACTION grants for Alcoa’s volunteer efforts.  ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods) recognizes the team efforts of Alcoa employees who spend time on a community service project for a local nonprofit/non-governmental organization.  Grants of either $3,000 or $1,500 are awarded depending on the number of volunteers and work hours.
