Lewellyn Branch ramp, bank fishing facilities complete

Alcoa, Tenn. -- A new boat access ramp and bank fishing pier are now open at the Lewellyn Branch area of Cheoah Reservoir off Highway 28 in Swain County, North Carolina. Both the ramp and pier are handicapped accessible. These recreational enhancements were cost-shared by Alcoa Power Generating Inc. (APGI) and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). The Lewellyn Branch facilities replace the former Panel Branch boat access area and provide a more suitable location from which to launch larger boats. APGI, NCWRC, and others agreed to construct, operate, and maintain the new site as part of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license. NCWRC’s boating access area regulations will apply. “We are pleased to partner with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission on this project. The access area provides a wonderful place for individuals to enjoy the natural beauty of the area and take advantage of boating and fishing activities,†said Bill Bunker, VP and Operations Manager of APGI. “The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is continuously looking for opportunities to increase access to public waters across the state, and the mountain region is no exception,†said Erik Christofferson, chief of the Commission’s Division of Engineering Services. “We are grateful for Alcoa’s help on this project and look forward to many years of boating and fishing access at Lewellyn Branch thanks to this partnership.†Tapoco is a division of APGI, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa Inc. The Tapoco Division of APGI supplies electric power to Alcoa’s Tennessee Operations, an aluminum rolling mill, located in Alcoa, Tennessee.
