Three of the dams, Cheoah, Calderwood and Chilhowee are located on the Little Tennessee River between two Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) hydroelectric projects: Fontana (upstream) and Tellico (downstream). The fourth dam, Santeetlah, is located on the Cheoah River, a tributary to the Little Tennessee River.
