Health & Safety
The health and safety of our employees is our top priority.
Our focus in 2013 was on the continued deployment of human performance (HP), a four-level program that teaches employees how to recognize error and error-likely situations to predict, reduce, manage, and prevent fatalities and injuries from occurring.
We are seeing the results of that and other efforts, as all three of our safety rates declined to their lowest levels in five years. Our overall lost workday (LWD) rate in Europe declined to 0.06 in 2013—a 70% decrease since 2009.
In Russia, we had our fourth calendar year with zero fatalities due, in large part, to efforts focused on eliminating fatality risks. Our two Russian operating locations—Samara and Belaya Kalitva—eliminated 84 such risks in 2013, bringing the total number eliminated to 9,589 since the facilities were acquired in 2005.
Our Russian operations also had significant improvement in the total recordable incident rate (TRIR) and days away, restricted, and transfer (DART) rate. The TRR in 2013 was 0.15 versus 0.30 in 2012. The DART rate declined to 0.07 from 0.28 during the same period. Both operating locations reached level three of HP implementation in 2013.
Our Global Primary Products (GPP) European facilities reduced their overall DART rate more than 40% between 2012 and 2013, achieving an all-time low rate of 0.12. The locations also set records for contractor safety, with a DART rate of 0.19 and a TRIR of 0.28.
In 2013, all of our European locations participated in the Global Corporate Challenge, a program to promote physical activity among the workforce. At our six Global Primary Products locations in Europe, 581 employees participated on 83 teams. The total distance walked, biked, or run by these employees was more than 387,000 miles (622,800 kilometers).
In addition to the GCC, GPP Europe locations offered a program focused on a healthy diet that helped 812 participants lose more than 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms).
