One Tree, One Life

In São Luís, Brazil, a special park on the grounds of Alcoa’s Alumar refinery and smelter complex provides a visual reminder of the lives that may have been saved by employees who eliminated a fatality risk.

The One Tree, One Life Program began in March 2009 to support the plant’s fatality prevention program. For every fatality risk eliminated, employees associated with that achievement plant a tree in the Bosque Vida (life forest) park. A plaque next to each tree identifies both the risk and the employees who eliminated it. As of late 2010, the park contained 238 trees.

Prior to the program’s implementation, Alumar had experienced a 53% decline in fatality risks eliminated from 2006 through 2008. By late 2010, the number of risks eliminated almost doubled due, in large part, to the awareness-building One Tree, One Life Program.

“When I look at the field of trees, I feel that it is possible to create an injury-free workplace,” said José Carlos Sakai, environment, health and safety supervisor. “The park shows the commitment of the entire organization in valuing safety.”
