Alcoa Foundation Invests in Sustainability

Alcoa Foundation, Alcoa Russia and Fund for Sustainable Development announced the launch of a new program to promote responsible water resources management for sustainable development. The program will be implemented in Samara and Moscow, Russian communities where Alcoa has presence. The program is one of Alcoa Foundation ten two-year research initiatives realized across the globe.
Alcoa Foundation has announced a new $7 million investment in sustainability on February 28, 2011, when the International Corporate Philanthropy Day was celebrated. Ten, two-year Advancing Sustainability research initiatives will address regional environmental challenges, improve energy efficiency and enhance global reforestation projects. The investment aligns with Alcoa Foundation’s sustainability focus: ‘Reduce, Recycle, Replenish,’ and will engage employees and communities where Alcoa operates to enhance the environment.
The Responsible Water Resources Management program aims to provide organizations and individuals that take decisions on the federal, regional or local level with new approaches to better water management and raise the community awareness of these approaches. The program is designed and managed by Fund for Sustainable Development in partnership with the Institute of Water Issues (Moscow), Educational Center for Ecology and Safety (Samara). Participants in the program are also leading researchers from Moscow State University and Samara Technological University who focus on water resources management and technologies in industrial water treatment, as well as officials and environmental in the Samara region. The program is open for interested specialists.
The program agenda includes:
- study of water resources management challenges in Russia; - promotion of actionable solutions at various levels; - measures to improve treatment of industrial water with oil content; - upgrades of educational courses in industrial ecology.
The Responsible Water Resources Management program will help build up responsible attitude to water as a key global resource among community members and will contribute to local economic development based on innovative approaches to water resources protection.
