Alcoa Russia and three Russian universities - in Samara, Rostov-on-Don and Moscow - announced Senior Year Student Scholarship to reward students’ success in technical disciplines in the academic year of 2005/06. With this scholarship Alcoa Russia launches its Technical Education Support Program funded in part through a grant of $250,000 from Alcoa Foundation awarded to the Institute of International Education (IIE). This program will include the total of 117 scholarships for best students, grants for young professors and donation of technical aids to support the studies in three Russian Universities: Samara State Aerospace University, Don State Technical University and Moscow Steel and Alloy Institute. By supporting the efforts of most capable and diligent students, the Program aims to help increase the prestige of technical education which was undermined by the dramatic changes in the Russian society over the last 20 years. Alcoa Russia’s partnership with these universities and its program to improve the quality of technical education is an example of corporate social responsibility in action, and it will not impose any obligations on students. Scholarships will be awarded to students selected by the Selection Committee in an open competition. This Committee in each of the partner universities will include representatives of the university and one of Alcoa Russia locations, as well as representatives of local educational authorities and most respected decision makers in the community. Reward ceremonies for the winners are scheduled to be held at the universities in mid May.Alcoa believes that through this program, its locations in Samara, Belaya Kalitva and Moscow will gain experience in the management and oversight of community-based projects, and join a global family of more than 425 Alcoa locations in 42 countries that actively invest Foundation and Alcoa resources and their time in Alcoa communities.
