New community program to support technical intermediate vocational education

Samara Metallurgical Plant of Alcoa announces launch of a new community program to support technical intermediate vocational education. In this program Samara Metallurgical Plant partners with the State-run Educational Institution “Samara Metallurgical College”. The program is intended to improve the status of working professions and to involve young qualified workers in industrial businesses of Samara and Samara region.

The program includes a competition for Alcoa scholarships for senior students of the following specializations: “Installation and Service of Industrial Equipment”, “Maintenance of Electrical Equipment”, “Foundry Operation of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals”, “Metal Forming”, “Welding Engineering”. A joint selection committee was established to include top lecturers of Samara Metallurgical College and representatives of Samara Metallurgical Plant of Alcoa. During the selection process, students are evaluated based on their exam scores during last two terms, their practical activities and capabilities to represent their future professional life answering to a questionnaire related to their profession. Scholarships are appointed for a one-year term. The program provides totally 10 scholarships costing 1000 rubles pre month. Another important component of this program is to award senior students for their excellent knowledge in EHS and practical activities during competitions on professional skills (competitions of crane operators and welders). The program provides totally 6 awards costing from 1500 through 3500 rubles. The program also provides an opportunity to involve Alcoans to hold seminars and workshops, and to provide technical and methodical support to students. Plant tours for students and traineeships for teachers and masters of the college will be arranged under the program. The program will contribute to create additional incentives for students to obtain intermediate vocational technical education, and it proves Alcoa’s accountability for future business when it works with full operational load and requires additional qualified working staff.
