Grants to Students’ Ecological Projects

April 20, 2009, Moscow – Twelve school projects will be awarded grants as part of Alcoa Foundation conservation and sustainability program “We are in Charge of the Future”. Applications for this competition were reviewed by the Advisory Committee of the Fund for Sustainable Development which manages the program. The projects will be implemented by the program participants from schools and NGOs in Belaya Kalitva (the Rostov region) and Samara. This year, the total financing for projects will amount to Rub 1,265,710. The competition for Alcoa Foundation grants was held for the third year in a row.

Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa Russia in partnership with the Fund for Sustainable Development started the We are in Charge of the Future program in 2006. It aims at joining the resources of communities – middle schools and public organizations – in order to contribute into the region’s sustainability, bring up a socially active and responsible youth. The program involves students from middle schools in designing and implementation of projects which will benefit their communities. This involvement is executed via master-classes, research, participation in grant and creative competitions.

In Belaya Kalitva, the 2009 projects will focus on city’s green plantations. In cooperation with the Department for Greenery of Belaya Kalitva and with volunteers’ support, the program participants will make the Green Passport of Belaya Kalitva. To help the city maintain its plantations, a watering machine will be purchased and donated to the city on Alcoa Foundation behalf.

The main theme in Samara will be the students’ patronage of the Kirovsky district green areas and special natural areas in the Samara region which will include a wide range of on-hands activities for participant schools and volunteers to help improve the social and ecological situation in the community.

Thanks to the We are in Charge of the Future program more and more students in Samara and Belaya Kalitva are interested in ecological issues, hold research and participate in conservation projects.
