Samara Metallurgical Plant Completes Another Stage of Hot Mill Upgrade

In January, 2009, Samara Metallurgical Plant successfully completed another stage of the hot mill upgrade at the Flat Rolled Products business unit. A fume exhaust and insulation system was installed on the mill. The new system has eliminated a long-term and serious problem of fogging during hot milling in winter. The fog increased the level of contaminants (mineral oil) in the atmosphere of the shop, and condensation of fumes caused corrosion of good coils.
The upgraded system allows to prevent condensation on the shop constructions and coils, thus increasing the product yield. Moreover, this allows to eliminate the emulsion fumes by 95%, to return the separated oil into the system at the amount of 24 m3 max per shift for further treatment of emulsion, and to purify the air exhausted from the mill that significantly improved working conditions for the shop and plant employees.
The project budget totaled 147 mln. rubles, or 5.5 million dollars.
The 2800 semi continuous hot mill manufactured at the Novo-Kramatorskiy Machine-building Plant is the only Russian operating mill for aluminum alloy rolling with a group of 5 continuous mill stands. The mill was put into operation in 1958.
During its service period the mill has undergone several stages of upgrading. Having joined the family of Alcoa, the Samara plant put forward its technical modernization program on a new level.
In May, 2008 during the first stage of the hot mill upgrade, the software of the mill control system was changed, main drives of the mill stand and stands #2 and #5 were refurbished, it allowed to reduce surface defects, to improve the quality of rolled products and to increase the operational reliability of the equipment.
Currently, the Flat Rolled Products business unit of the Samara Metallurgical Plant produces sheets, coils, painted and coated strips, as well as can stock for soft and beer beverages, which is the most hi-tech type of rolled products. The Samara plant is the only Russian facility which manufactures aluminum can stock.
