Sergey Kiriyenko Meets With Alcoa's Management

On January 31, 2005, a meeting was held in Moscow between the authorized representative of the President of the Russian Federation (RF) for the Volga federal district, Sergey Kiriyenko, the chairman of the board of directors and the chief executive officer of the American Aluminum Corporation (Alcoa), Alain Belda, and the president of the firm Alcoa Europe, Ricardo Belda.

These talks took place at the behest of the Alcoa managers, who informed Sergey Kiriyenko of their firm's plans to expand its business into the Volga federal district (VFD). In particular, Alain and Ricardo Belda said that they intend to set up their own representative office in the district. This office will be opened in the Samara region, where the company acquired the Samara Metallurgy Plant (SMP) in 2004; however, its jurisdiction will extend to all of Alcoa's Russian facilities.

According to Alain Belda, the safety of the work force and the environment will be top priorities of the work performed in Russia. In 2005 alone, investments in the SMP and the Belokalitvinsk Metallurgical Production Association - the BKMPA (in the Rostov region), which Alcoa also acquired, will come to 80 million dollars.

Other aspects of cooperation between the district's enterprises and the aluminum giant were also discussed at this meeting; in particular, the need for cooperation between the VFD's aircraft plants and the BKMPA, which has a furnace for annealing outer aircraft wings that is unique in Russia, was noted.

As Sergey Kiriyenko stated at the meeting, the arrival in the district of Alcoa - a world leader in its segment of the metallurgical industry - will undoubtedly have a positive effect on both the region's level of corporate culture and its investment appeal.
