An environmental project for disabled children under the Alcoa Foundation Program “We are in charge of the future” is completed in Samara

Samara – In February 2010 a wrap-up event was held in the Samara Region Special Training Center (for disabled children) as part of the environmental project devoted to the nature conservation of the Samara Region. The project was implemented in 2009 in Samara under the Alcoa Foundation Environmental and Sustainability Program “We are in charge of the future”.

The Program is funded by Alcoa Foundation and implemented by the Fund for Sustainable Development (FSD, Moscow). One of the key targets of the Program is to support nature conservation and community sustainable development on partner areas (Samara and Belaya Kalitva in Rostov Region) through educational programs and practical activities in schools and the community. Since 2008 the Program has also involved disabled children from Samara.

The project initiated by the Samara Special Training Center involved 118 disabled children from rural schools and special correctional boarding schools of the Samara region. The students examined natural landmarks located in 5 districts of the Samara Region, implemented 5 conservation projects, cleaned up and beautified totally 3 hectares of natural areas.

School students from an orphanage for disabled children in Chapayevsk showed their own fairy tale about conservation of Semyonovskoye lake where they normally spend their summer vacation. Foster children from an orphanage of Obsharovka village made a literature composition about the nearby Mokhoshkino oak wood. ‘Forest guards are always struggling against illegal wood cutting, and we are trying our best to help them conserve the wood. We clean up the site, remove garbage from the area and look after young oak trees to save them from cutting’, – children said.

School students from the Zhigulyovsk boarding school told a story about the way they took care of the Zhigulyovsky Natural Reserve area, about their environmental visits to the Natural Monument Molodetsky Hill and the way they involved small school children into the school patronage movement. Children from Kamyshla  shared their experience in rehabilitation of natural springs, and showed a folk dance with self-made wooden buckets and restored shoulder balance-lever. After dancing children helped guests to drink pure spring water from the rehabilitated Kara-tap spring thus to show that they attracted local small businesses to rehabilitation of this water source.

The project is formally completed however its community targeted activities will continue: young oak trees are growing in a greenhouse of the Obsharovka boarding school to be set out soon in the Mokhoshkino oak wood; a wooden shelter was made for the natural spring in Kamyshla settlement; environmental path is being made near Semyonovka village; preparations to beautify another natural landmark in the Zhigulyovsky Natural Reserve area are being carried out. Environmental visits of disabled children from boarding schools of the Samara region to natural areas will be continued in 2010.
