Alcoa SMZ is one of EcoLeader contest winners

Samara – the ceremony of awarding winners of the twelfth annual regional contest EcoLeader-2010 took place in Samara Philharmonic Society. ZAO Alcoa SMZ was awarded the 2nd degree diploma in Large Enterprise category. Valery Pechorin, Ecological department Manager, received award on behalf of the location.

EcoLeader contest is initiated by the Ministry of forest management, environment protection and natural resources of Samara region to identify and recognize municipal institutions, organizations and citizens for their achievements in environment protection and environmental management. 

The environmental programs of ZAO Alcoa SMZ are implemented on different levels: corporate and local. Alcoa executives realize the importance of reduction of production negative impact and sets a high value on production of environmentally safe products. The Company included the objectives to reduce its environmental footprint into the list of its long-term strategic objectives on sustainable development. ZAO Alcoa SMZ annually plans and implements activities aimed at reduction of natural resources consumption, energy and materials consumption, reduction of emission into the atmosphere, as well as enhancement of waste disposal.

ZAO Alcoa SMZ also actively participates in the programs of the corporate non-commercial Alcoa Foundation, which promotes green-thinking attitude and environment protection in the regions where Alcoa operates. In 2010 Alcoa together with its Russian partner – Fund for Sustainable Development – continued realization of “In Charge of the Future” program that aims to support sustainable development and environment protection of partnership areas in Russia through raising young people’s awareness and support of the local social organizations. In 2010 Alcoa SMZ volunteers planted about 150 trees and bushes through “Ten Million Trees by 2020” Program.

ZAO Alcoa SMZ participates in EcoLeader contest in Large Enterprise category since 2002, each time receiving recognition of its environmental achievements (in 2003 and 2009 the plant was named winner of EcoLeader). The Environmental management system of the location was among the first in the Samara region to be certified with ISO 14001 standard. All the projects implemented at the location have to undergo environmental expertise.


ZAO Alcoa SMZ (previously – JSC Samara Metallurgical Plant) is Russia’s largest producer of fabricated aluminum (commissioned in July 1960). It manufactures a wide range of flat rolled products, extrusions, and forgings of all aluminum alloys in compliance with international and Russian standards. The plant serves customers in many markets, including aerospace, shipbuilding, oil and gas, packaging, and transportation.
 
The plant's production and quality control systems have been ISO 9001:2008 certified and its Ecological Management system has been ISO 14001:2004 certified.
