Samara Metallurgical Plant Organized the First Plant Tour for Community Members

On May 22nd, 2009, Samara Metallurgical Plant hosted its first guests from the community - students and lecturers from the International Institute of Market (Samara).

A group of students and lecturers from the International Institute of Market (Samara) visited Samara Metallurgical Plant for a plant tour. This event was part of Alcoa’s new local community project “Plant tours for university and secondary school students of Samara”. The participants of the first group included students and teachers from the International Institute of Market and the University of Central Florida (USA). The foreign students attend the educational course “International Business in Russia” in the International Institute of Market as part of student exchange program.

The agenda of the plant tour included instructions and presentation on EHS, visiting Alcoa Center of Excellence (training center of Alcoa Business System) and tours to FRP (Flat-rolled products), Forgings and Extrusions. Alcoa guests could see technological equipment and products of the Samara Metallurgical Plant, and observe production and business processes. They could see the cold and hot rolling mills work, as well as can stock slitter (Samara Metallurgical plant is the sole can stock producer in Russia), the unique horizontal press with the capacity of 20,000 tons and the vertical press with the capacity of 75,000 tons.

At the end of the tour our visitors were suggested to fill in questionnaire to evaluate a degree of their interest in the changes made at the plant. The correspondents were almost unanimous (94%) about high responsibility of the plant and company management for labor safety of Alcoa employees.

The project was launched in order to promote professional orientation with students and in order to improve the image of technical specialties and working professions in metallurgy. The initiative is based on the demand for young qualified employees and raising the prestige of technical professions. The project aims to involve students from secondary schools that Alcoa collaborates with in Samara, as well as students and teachers from vocational and higher educational institutions.
