Alcoa Russia and Alcoa Foundation Continue Technical Education Program in Leading Universities

Moscow, Samara, Rostov-on-Don – For the third year in a row Alcoa Russia and Alcoa Foundation announce a competition for Alcoa Foundation scholarships and development stipends for students and young faculty as part of the Technical Education Support Program for technical universities in Alcoa Russia locations.

In this program, Alcoa Russia and Alcoa Foundation partnered with three leading universities – Samara State Aerospace University (SGAU), Donskoy State Technical University (DGTU) in Rostov-on-Don and Moscow Steel and Alloy Institute (MISiS). Alcoa Foundation scholarships and development stipends are intended to help provide basic living expenses allowing students and young faculty to concentrate full time on their studies and work.
Alcoa Foundation Technical Education Support Program was launched in 2006 and since then has become a visible sign of Alcoa presence in its Russian communities. This year, it includes 119 scholarships for students at engineering faculties, 13 development stipends for young faculty members, and donations of laboratory and lecture equipment to SGAU and DGTU.
A selection committee was established in each of the partner universities to include top professors, representatives of Alcoa Russia, local authorities and public figures. The committees are responsible for the selection process and advise Alcoa Russia how to best proceed with this Program. During the selection process, students are evaluated based on their exam scores, research activities and answers to a questionnaire related to their profession. Young faculty members are evaluated based on their individual development plans to be fulfilled within approximately one year. The award ceremonies for the winners in the competition will be held in April.
Another important component of this program is the donations is the donations by Alcoa Foundation of equipment to modernize lecture rooms and laboratories at partner universities.  Since the start of the program, several lecture rooms in SGAU and DGTU were upgraded using the donated equipment. The up-to-date multimedia equipment allows these universities to enhance their teaching and learning processes through implementation of innovative programs and access to advance research and new information technologies.
Alcoa Foundation Technical Education Program aligns with the national strategy to promote technical education announced by Russia’s President in March of 2006. With this Program, Alcoa Russia aims to contribute to the prestige of technical education, create additional incentives for students, help the partner universities retain their promising young faculty members and enhance the universities’ technical capabilities.
