April 22, 2011 – For the sixth time in a row, Alcoa Russia awarded certificates of Alcoa Foundation scholarships to twenty four students and five young faculty at Donskoy State Technical University (DGTU) in Rostov-on-Don. Earlier in April, award ceremonies took place in two other partner universities in this program, - Moscow Steel and Alloy Institute (MISiS) and Samara State Aerospace University (SGAU), and two technical colleges - Samara Metallurgical College and Belaya Kalitva Polytechnic School. In total, this year Alcoa Foundation scholarships were awarded to 60 university students, 13 young faculty and 20 college students.
The award ceremony in SGAU was attended by cosmonaut Vladimir Kovalenok who was the cosmonaut-in-command in three space flights in the period from 1977 to 1981 and spent in space in total 215 days. He talked to the audience and answered their questions.
The competition for scholarships is part of the Technical Education Program for technical universities and colleges has been implemented by Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa Russia in three Russian locations since 2006. Alcoa Foundation scholarships are intended to help provide basic living expenses and additional incentives for professional growth and research work.
During the selection process, students are evaluated based on their exam scores, research activities and answers to the questionnaire related to their profession. Young faculty members are evaluated based on their individual development plans to be fulfilled within approximately one year. A selection committee was established in each of the partner universities to include top professors, representatives of Alcoa Russia, local authorities and public figures. In addition to the selection process, members of the selection committees advise Alcoa Russia on ways to develop the program and increase its impact.
As part of the Technical Education Program SGAU and DGTU are donated equipment to help them modernize their auditoria and laboratories.
Alcoa Foundation Technical Education Program aligns with the national strategy to raise the prestige of technical professions which was recently emphasized by President Dmitry Medvedev. It aims to create additional incentives for students, help the partner universities retain their promising young faculty members and enhance the universities’ technical capabilities.
