Samara Plant is One of Environmental Leaders Among Russian Companies

November 25, Samara – Sergey Simak, Cochairman of International Social and Environmental Council (MSES), discussed the results of a Russian environmental rating 2007 for the companies of Samara Region at a press conference.

Independent Environmental Rating Agency (NERA) provided the review of the Samara Regional companies. IERA is an affiliate of International Social and Environmental Council.

Samara Metallurgical Plant became one of the Russian environmental leaders taking 6th place out of over 3,000 Russian companies.
Other regional companies in the environmental rating Top-100 include: AVTOVAZ (4th place), KuybyshevAzot (44th place), Togliattiazot (59th place).

According to environmentalists, under current financial crisis conditions, real sector companies will prove their effectiveness for access to loans and investments.

Environmentalists of MSES-NERA have suggested a solution to estimate effectiveness of companies through measurable energetic and environmental indicators.

The rating is based on the following indicators:

  • transparency level of environmental reporting of the company;
  • amount of used water and soil, wastewater, emissions and solid waste per each million rubles of revenue;
  • number of environmental expenses during a year per employee;
  • rate of environmental impact decline versus last year;
  • rate of environmental impact decline since 2000;

Samara Metallurgical Plant (commissioned in July 1960) is Russia’s largest producer of fabricated aluminum.
