From June 1 through June 17, 2009, Samara Metallurgical Plant, Alcoa Russia, together with the English Language Center (Samara) organized the ‘Getting Ready for Speech. Debates & Discussions’ interactive English language training for students from middle schools of the Kirovskiy district of Samara. The training was held at the middle school no. 133 (Kirovskiy district of Samara). The training courseware was provided by the US Embassy in Russia. The project was financially supported by the Samara Metallurgical Plant Alcoa Russia. Totally 35 school students from partner middle schools including children of Alcoa’s employees were participated in the project. During the last two weeks school students received intensive conversational English training, improved their communicative skills in English, and learned to rightly express, present and defend their own opinions in English. The training program included intensive English sessions and team-works, playing role- and communication games, presentations, discussions, dialogues and other toolkits in English. Children were trained by experienced teachers from the English Language Center who had been trained in English language camps abroad: Yevgeniya Kudryavtseva (project coordinator), Albina Krasnova, Natalia Sedoikina, Natalia Kazakova. Inspirer of the training was Yuliya Markushina – director of the English Language Center who arranged a conference call with the students. At final session each group had to present its own projects in English. Students from Group One made short individual presentations on different subjects. Children were talking with confidence about themselves, their best friends, favorite people and books. Participants from Group Two held an interesting discussion about their favorite films and actors demonstrating their good skills in expressing and defending their own points of view in English. Task given to Group Three was the most complicated – children had to hold team debates on the ‘Unified State Examination compared with Standard Examination’ subject. Students got brilliantly through the task and demonstrated not only excellent knowledge of English, but also their abilities to control their feelings in debates and disputes, to listen to opponent ideas and to become convincing in their arguments. All participants of the training course were awarded with special certificates in English. School students and teachers were satisfied with the results of their joint work. Below there are some students’ sayings: “I would like to thank all people who organized our training. Due to this project I learnt to think and to speak in English. I hope that the project will continue next year. Special thanks to Alcoa – our sponsor!” (Ksenia Usova, school 133). “Every day of the training course was unique and very interesting. I learned many new things and words…” (Olga Geras’kina, school 112). “I met new friends here, learnt to hold discussions and improved my English. I want to thank very much our teachers and sponsors – Alcoa and Samara Metallurgical Plant” (Evgeniy Semenov, school 106). “I learnt to make presentations in English. I even could not imagine this earlier. I want this wonderful time to be extended…” (Katya Sytchova). Organizers and teachers used their best efforts to create the atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding, and to bring children enjoyment and pleasure through their communication in English.
