Alcoa Supports Second Edition of “Myths of Economics” by Sergey Guriev

On September 15th Alcoa Russia’s office in Moscow hosted a presentation of the second enlarged edition of “Myths of Economics. Misconceptions and Stereotypes Promoted by Media and Politicians” by Sergey Guriev. The book was issued in September by Alpina Business Books Publishing House through Alcoa support. The participants of the presentation were Sergey Guriev, the author of the book; Andrey Donets, Alcoa Russia President; Elena Evgrafova, Editor in chief for Alpina Business Books; and media representatives.

The book by Mr Guriev, a well-known Russian economist, Rector of New Economic School (NES), targets to narrate in a simple language about up-to-date achievements of economical science for Russia and help readers to puzzle out numerous economic misconceptions and stereotypes that dominate in the public conscience. The second edition of the book is enlarged with a special chapter on the current economic crisis.

Elena Evgrafova opened the meeting - she said that she had no doubt about the future commercial and reading success of the book in the genre of “economics for non-economists”, as Elena defined. There is not much good popular-scientific literature, especially on economics, while the demand for it is high. Ms. Evgrafova also thanked Alcoa for the support in publishing of the book and expressed the opinion that companies that support such literature should be named philanthropists, not sponsors.

Andrey Donets emphasized Alcoa’s cooperation with New Economic School and Alcoa Foundation’s support to New Economic School: “Alcoa is proud of its long-term friendship with Sergey (Guriev). His book is the implementation of that enlightening idea that he serves to as a rector of NES and a wonderful Russian economist – development of economical education and general economical awareness in Russia. It is a good cause and Alcoa is glad to support it".

Sergey Guriev (an extract from the introduction to the second edition of “Myths of Economics”): “I am especially pleased to thank Alcoa for support of the second edition of my book. I know Alcoa well and have known it for a long time – it is a world leader in aluminum industry – that is why it is a great honor for me that it was Alcoa, a gathering of best professionals, goal-oriented and highly-ethical people, that partnered with Alpina Business Books to publish my book.”

Collaboration of Alcoa Foundation and New Economic School
In 2008 New Economic School (NES) received a 3-year $300,000 grant from Alcoa Foundation, a non-commercial charitable Alcoa affiliated organization, for an economics professorship. The economics professorship is aimed at gathering a world-class faculty at NES and retaining the specialist in Russia.

The grant program includes delivering a number of workshops as part of another Alcoa Foundation Program  – Technical Education Support Program (ATESP). The workshops are held for teachers of economics in three leading technical universities that Alcoa Foundation partners with as part of ATESP: Samara State Aerospace University (SGAU), Don State Technical University (DGTU, Rostov-on-Don), Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISiS). During a three-day workshop teachers and post-graduate students learn about innovative methods of teaching economics. The first workshop was successfully held in SGAU in March 2009 and was dedicated to the Theory of Games.
Education is one of the Areas of Excellence of Alcoa Foundation worldwide.
