Alcoa Foundation Scholarships at Technical Universities

April 28, 2009, Samara – Alcoa Russia awarded certificates of Alcoa Foundation scholarships to thirty students and Alcoa Foundation development stipends to five young faculty at Samara State Aerospace University (SGAU). The competition for scholarships and development stipends is part of the Technical Education Program for technical universities in Alcoa Russia locations. Earlier in April, reward ceremonies took place in two other partner universities - Moscow Steel and Alloy Institute (MISiS) and Donskoy State Technical University (DGTU) in Rostov-on-Don. Alcoa Foundation scholarships and development stipends are intended to help provide basic living expenses and additional incentives for professional growth and research work.

Alcoa Foundation Technical Education Program was launched in 2006. This year, it includes 75 scholarships for students at engineering faculties, 13 development stipends for young faculty members, and donations of equipment to SGAU and DGTU to help them modernize their auditoria.

A selection committee was established in each of the partner universities to include top professors, representatives of Alcoa Russia, local authorities and public figures. The committees are responsible for the selection process and advise Alcoa Russia how to best proceed with this Program. During the selection process, students are evaluated based on their exam scores, research activities and answers to the questionnaire related to their profession. Young faculty members are evaluated based on their individual development plans to be fulfilled within approximately one year.

Alcoa Foundation Technical Education Program aims to contribute to the prestige of technical education, create additional incentives for students, help the partner universities to retain their promising young faculty members and enhance the universities’ technical capabilities.

«The Alcoa Foundation stipend for young faculty is a great incentive which attracts young specialists to teach at technical faculties. It enables a fellow to participate in scientific and research conferences in other cities and to improve in teaching and research activities. This program also provides funds for additional equipment for the laboratories which helps us  in our research work, improves its quality and applicability in teaching”, - said Sergei Voronin, a young faculty member at the Metals Technology and Aviation Materials department at SGAU, and two times Alcoa Foundation fellow.
