Alcoa’s Support to Community Initiatives in the Metallurg District of Samara

Samara – A round-table conference on development of community social and volunteer initiatives in the Metallurg district was held in Samara with Alcoa’s support. The conference was initiated by the Samara Metallurgical Plant of Alcoa and organized by the Samara regional non-governmental association “Povolzhie”. It was aimed at joining efforts of local community initiative groups, NGOs, municipal and governmental entities and other organizations in order to improve the quality of life in the community.

Representatives of local and municipal administrative authorities, Alcoa’s volunteers, NGOs, governmental and municipal educational and social organizations acting in the community, and initiative and youth groups participated in the conference.
Alcoa Samara’s interest in the Metallurg community opportunities is not accidental – the plant is  located in this district, therefore it is of prior interest for Alcoa community activities in Samara. Moreover, this district was built and developed due to the setting-up of the Samara Metallurgical Plant here in 1960. Most of its employees and their family members live in this district which is also the largest one in Samara.
One of the key goals of the conference was to identify the most important problems of this territory based on opinions of local people who live and work here. During the conference the most relevant issues for the community and key priorities were identified. A special focus was made on the participation of various stakeholder groups, including volunteers, in addressing the needs. Based on results of the conference, several initiative groups were formed which will develop and implement their own social and volunteer projects aimed at solving the community problems to further attract additional resources.
