Alcoa Launches Oil and Gas Web Site Highlighting New Technologies for Offshore Exploration and Production

October 23, 2007 NEW YORK & HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Alcoa announced today that it has launched a new website (www.alcoaoilandgas.com) that highlights the significant advantages of its technologies for providing better program economics, speed, and range versus traditional materials used in oil and gas exploration and production. In particular for offshore operations, Alcoa is developing and deploying technologies capable of reducing overall weight on a rig by more than 1,000 tons, which will help enable the industry to economically reach reserves previously thought to be too expensive to develop.

For the oil and gas industry, Alcoa provides leading-edge engineered solutions, products, and systems for upstream and downstream operations, including exploration, production, refining, petrochemical, LNG, and product storage.

Our products and services extend the performance, range, capability and efficiency of industry operations and include a wide range of metals including aluminum, titanium, nickel based “super” alloys, steel and stainless steel. Our product families include forgings, extrusions, fastening systems, and various basic materials including sheet, plate, and alumina powder.

Ultra-light extruded alloy drill pipe
Alcoa is introducing its latest line of ultra-light drill pipe which provides for equivalent steel pipe performance but at half the net weight. These new drill strings have been specifically designed to provide significant operational advantages for those running extended reach drilling operations, ultra-deep water drilling operations, or those desiring to re-task existing assets into deeper drilling operations.

Beyond drill pipe, Alcoa is currently developing several other drilling systems designed to help the industry reduce weight while maintaining or improving performance. Systems under development include ultra-light choke and kill line "retrofits", landing strings, completion risers, accumulator bottles and air cans. In total, Alcoa has systems under development that are capable of reducing the weight of a conventional drill ship or platforms by over 1000 tons.

High performance forgings
In addition to its advanced product design capabilities, Alcoa is utilizing its vast manufacturing infrastructure to support the industry through the production of complex forgings and systems. Globally, Alcoa has the widest range of forgings assets within the industry, capable of handling both open and closed die applications with press capacities in excess of 82 KT. With its aerospace heritage, Alcoa is capable of providing the highest level of quality, performance and capability needed to meet and exceed the requirements of today’s complex and demanding industry operations.
