What is your favorite thing about working at Alcoa?
"You feel your worth. The projects I've been handed will have significant impact on production personnel as well as company profits. Alcoa is my 4th internship in 3 companies, and the projects I dealt with felt very removed from the company's bottom line. Of course the work I was handed was real work, but at Alcoa, Inc., the work is more than just real, it's important. I feel like I'm a part of something, and my attitude is that I want to make something better here."

  • Onsrud Saw CNC & Drives Upgrade - a controls upgrade to enhance efficiency and throughput on a saw capable of cutting circles, diamonds, and other complex shapes
  • # 2 Mesta Leveler Electrical Upgrade - change out an operating station with simpler, easier to use operating controls
  • Plate Mill Ager Alarm System - centralize the handling of alarm and fault notification through the use of PLC intercommunication, HMI screens, and real-world outputs such as alarm horns and warning lights
  • Horizontal Heat Treat Hearth Displays - present production statistics via message displays similar to those that flash time and temperature right outside your local bank
  • File System Database Update - expand the functionality of a database application to incorporate automated e-mail notifications

What is your favorite thing about working at Alcoa?
"I've had other internships before, but Alcoa is different. I really feel the opportunities Alcoa offers coincide with my goals. I've wanted to be involved with automation, and controls, and PLC work in the past. I'm involved with those things now, and it's truly excellent."

  • A maintenance screen to be used by Operating and Maintenance has been developed to interface to the Accuray gauge in the 3 Cold Mill. This screen is very similar to one in use at 1 Cold Mill.
  • Spent some time reviewing the screen with the end users so that it will provide the best interface possible for their purpose.
  • Working on a small series of web pages that will provide information generated by the G&L flatness system to a wide user audience.

  • #4 Tension Leveler: The rewind mandrel needs a new urethane sleeve. This is basically a big rubber cylinder that covers the mandrel so that the coils of aluminum don't become scratched during the rewind. Measurements of the old sleeve needed to be made and an order for a new sleeve was sent to Vail Rubber Works. A test sleeve has just arrived and will be tested on the mandrel before the actual sleeve is made.
  • 60" Line Roll Frame Removal: A roll that was supported by a large frame has been removed. The frame is now no longer needed so a detailed description of how to disassemble the frame and remove it without affecting the surrounding equipment needs to be drawn up.

  • Grounding brush for the #12 slitter rewind mandrel
  • #14 VHT platform for quench tank motor removal
  • #1 Litho line mixer for the neutralization tank

What is your favorite thing about working at Alcoa?
"For my job, I get many different problems that you can't really train for. For all of my projects, I need to sit down and just sketch ideas or get a designer."
