Alcoa Foundation Donates over $100,000 in Local Community

The Massena Neighborhood Center, Canton-Potsdam Hospital Foundation and Massena Rescue Squad are several organizations that will be enhancing and expanding programs this year with the aid of Alcoa Foundation grants. Alcoa Foundation has awarded over $111,000 in six grants to local community organizations this year. Three grants are new and three represent payments on multi-year grants previously awarded.
The Massena Neighborhood Center will be using a $19,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation to establish an Emergency Assistance Program to help struggling local families with basic needs such as rent, heat and prescriptions. The Neighborhood Center currently offers these services, but this grant will allow them to expand services to meet an increased need being driven by the current economy. This fund will be used to bridge gaps once other avenues of assistance have been exhausted or if families don’t qualify for assistance.
A $15,000 grant to the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Foundation will support a Cancer Patient Navigation program. This is an expansion of a patient navigation program focused on breast cancer that began in 2007 with the assistance of an Alcoa Foundation grant. The program will provide ongoing support to individual patients to help reduce and eliminate barriers to obtaining appropriate tests, diagnosis and treatment.
The Massena Rescue Squad will use a $15,000 Foundation grant to purchase communication and dive rescue equipment, as well as to establish a community CPR program.
Grant payments made on multi-year grants include $25,000 to Massena Memorial Hospital, representing the final year of a $75,000 grant used to purchase respirators; $22,000 to the Northern Area Health Education Center, Inc. (NAHEC), representing the final payment of a $53,100 grant to create a virtual science and technology career center; and $15,000 as the final payment of a $45,000 grant to St. Lawrence University to support the Akwesasne Semester.
