Reuse Tips

Reuse Everyday Items
Reusing items, by repairing them, donating them to charity and community groups, or selling them, also reduces waste. Reusing products, when possible, is even better than recycling because the item does not need to be reprocessed before it can be used again. Simple steps you can take include:
  • Use durable coffee mugs.
  • Use cloth napkins or towels.
  • Refill bottles.
  • Use rechargeable batteries.
  • Purchase refillable pens and pencils.
  • Donate unwanted items such as old magazines, clothes, or surplus equipment.
  • Reuse boxes. Even cereal boxes can gain new life as shelf organizers for favourite magazines or important papers with a few simple modifications.
  • Turn empty jars and plastic containers into storage for leftover food or loose items such as paper clips or safety pins.

Reuse Food Scraps
Food waste that winds up in landfills generates methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Take charge of your greenhouse gas emissions by composting food scraps (except meat) in a backyard composting bin or even a worm bin. A bonus: Your plants will love the nutrient-laden finished compost.

Donate or Sell
When you do decide to replace something large and "reusable", be sure to donate the older item to charitable outlets such as the Salvation Army and others that are probably in your area. Most of the time, the item can be repaired by those groups and then redistributed into other homes rather than landfills.

Or, hold a garage sale or give-away. And ask your neighbours to join in too, this shares the work and increases the number of unused things that can find new homes and new uses.
