Alcoa Sponsors Local Robotics Teams
Two Alcoa facilities are supporting their local high school robotics teams. For the second year, Howmet Castings-Whitehall, Michigan USA, sponsors the White Lake, Michigan area FIRST Robotics team, and AFL Automotive, Allen Park, Michigan supports the Melvindale High School team for the seventh year. The FIRST program -- "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" - combines sports and engineering for high school students and asks local professionals to work as mentors. The student/professional team has six weeks to design, build, and program a "robot" that can compete in regional events. The White Lake team, who aced their regional competitions last year, is beginning regional competition this year with a good chance to move on to the finals in Atlanta, GA. The Melvindale team is hot, with two first place finishes so far.
