Landfill Pizza Projects
Alcoa Howmet Castings in Whitehall sponsored a "Landfill Pizza" project to promote environmental awareness among youth. The project involved more than 300 fifth graders from two local school districts who created "pizzas" made out of trash. The students collected the garbage after receiving information about what is typically found in a landfill and the percentage that each category of rubbish represents there. The goal of the project was to help students become more aware of the amount of trash that is buried in our landfills and the importance of recycling. The Howmet Spirit Committee judged the decorated pizzas for both the environmental message and the artwork. Each school had three fifth grade winners, who each were awarded a $20 gift certificate and a coupon for free pizza. The winning students, their parents, their teachers and principals, and city officials from Montague and Whitehall attended an awards luncheon at the plant. At the luncheon, a presentation was made about Alcoa Howmet's efforts in recycling and reducing waste. The plant has reduced its waste by 3,600 tons per year over the last four years.
