Grants and volunteers help sponsor science camp for girls

Allendale, Michigan, July 30, 2003 -- Alcoa Howmet Whitehall and the Alcoa Foundation provided the Grand Valley State University’s STEPS Program in Allendale, Michigan, USA with a $25,000 grant and enthusiastic volunteers for a week-long summer camp aimed at bringing science and engineering to 7th grade girls.

Women engineers, chemists and scientists from Howmet Whitehall spent the day with campers in the Grand Valley State University’s STEPS (Science, Technology and Engineering Preview) Program, an initiative of the society of Manufacturing Engineers dedicated in encouraging more young women to consider further study in engineering and the sciences. Week-long summer camps for 7th grade girls are currently being held across the Midwest and volunteers like those from Howmet are necessary in bringing their expertise into the classroom to share with the girls. The program includes activities in robotics, aerodynamics, chemistry, web design and automation. STEPS participants will be tracked through college to monitor the impact of the program.
