Volunteers make a difference in the classroom

The 11-year partnership between Alcoa Howmet, Whitehall, Michigan, and Ealy Elementary School, contributed to the hometown school's earning a state of Michigan 2008 Education Excellence Award for "Improving Student Achievement in Math and Science."

Since 1997, Ealy Elementary students' math and science comprehension scores have increased to the mid-90s on a scale of 100 points. "Our volunteers have great enthusiasm for the program and a passion for sharing their knowledge with the children," said Judy Bosma, human resources manager. Each year about 35 employees volunteer for classroom duty.

Alcoa Howmet's Gail Cole, director of technical services, holds the Education Excellence Award presented to Ealy Elementary School on May 6 in Lansing, Michigan. With him are (l to r) Whitehall District Schools Superintendent Darlene Dongvillo, Ealy Principal Dave Rodgers, teacher Dan Meinert, and school board member Ruth Grenell.
