With an eye on conservation and sustainability, we have worked to improve the environment in which we live and operate. Some of the highlights include:
- 77 acres of a variety of fruit including Bing and Rainier cherries, apricots, pears and Fugi, Golden and Granny Smith apples have all been planted and are now growing within the smelter property and produce first-quality products while enhancing the landscape.
- We sponsored 30 local citizens for Interagency Hazardous Response Training to help the community be better prepared for an emergency situation.
- Plant employees, in conjunction with the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council, have raised and released approximately 600 pheasants in the local area. Employees have also developed over 10 acres of wildlife habitat along the Columbia River to help preserve and attract other wildlife species.
- Donated $10,000 to the Elk Foundation to be used to purchase tract land in the region to improve elk habitat.
- In a joint effort with the Chelan County PUD, employees have placed numerous bird boxes and eagle perches along the riverfront.
- Employees have worked in tandem with Washington State University to conduct environmental surveys to ensure potential impact on nearby vegetation is minimal.
- Donated $100,000 to the Wenatchee Valley College’s Institute for Rural Innovation and Stewardship to complete a facility expansion. With the help of the Alcoa Foundation, the Institute has been able to serve as a vital hub for the exchange and dissemination of agriculture information and educational activities to advance the development of sustainable, conservation-oriented rural communities and agriculture-based economies.
- Planted or donated more than 5,000 trees for stream development in conjunction with Alcoa’s global initiative to plant 1 million trees worldwide.
- Closed the on-site landfill as part of the Wenatchee Land Stewardship effort
- Donated $5,000 to Trout Unlimited for its Leavenworth stream walking park development used by schools for science classes.
