Alcoa Foundation gives $271,460 to Vanderburgh and Warrick County Organizations

NEWBURGH, IN: September 28, 2005 - Alcoa Foundation is granting $271,460 to 30 nonprofit organizations working in Vanderburgh and Warrick Counties. These funds are a part of more than $15 million that will be distributed around the world by Alcoa Foundation this year.

Each year, the Warrick Operations Community Advisory Board - a group of 18 elected officials, business leaders, nonprofit managers, and media representatives - reviews the applications received and makes recommendations to Alcoa's managers about funding. In 2005, the group evaluated more than 50 applications that totaled more than $650,000 before making final recommendations to the Warrick management team.

"The decisions made by the Alcoa Community Advisory Board are very difficult. It is a great opportunity to learn about the good work being done in the community, but it is so difficult to choose which projects to fund," said State Senator-Elect Vaneta Becker. "They are all great requests - the competition for funding is tremendous."

"In my short time in this community, I have already seen the great work being done by so many organizations. Southwestern Indiana is a great place to live because everyone comes together to do good work for the community," said Ann Whitty, Vice President and General Manager of Alcoa Warrick Operations. "Our Community Advisory Board is a great example of people giving back to the community. We truly appreciate the time that these very busy people give to review the applications and recommend how we should invest our Alcoa Foundation funds."

Royce Haws, Primary Metals Location Manager, added, "The Alcoa Foundation funds make a substantial difference to the organizations that receive them. It's just one way that we give back to the local community, and it's rewarding to know that the funds will be used by good organizations to make the lives of area residents even better."

The following is a list of the Alcoa Foundation grants made through Warrick Operations in 2005. There are three grants (totaling $26,500) that are awaiting final review by Foundation staff.
