Furthermore, Warrick Operations has developed the following "guiding principles" to assist us in directing our gifts of grants, sponsorships, employee volunteer time, etc.
Shaping Tomorrow's Workforce...Building a Sustainable Community
Alcoa Foundation giving in 2007 will focus on:
- Lifelong learning to promote a diverse, skilled workforce with an emphasis on math and science.
- Building a more sustainable community through projects that educate, reduce waste, conserve energy or protect natural systems.
For these and other projects/ideas we are asked to consider, emphasis will be placed on:
- Community solutions that address the cause, not the symptom - or initiatives that move organizations toward financial stability
- Collaborative initiatives extending the reach of our resources and leading to enduring change
- Demonstration of clearly defined outcomes and longer-term impacts
As everyone involved with Alcoa Foundation works to eliminate transactional time and waste in the process, we will strive to make larger investments, including some multi-year opportunities, with fewer overall grants.
How To Apply & Key Dates To Be Aware Of
Before February 28, 2007: Applicants who wish to be considered for a 2007 grant must submit a letter on organization letterhead signed by the President or Executive Director. The letter should be no more than 2 pages in length, and should address:
- The organization's Employer Identification Number (EIN, "501c3 designated" number). If you have not received AF funding in the last 5 years, please include a hard copy of your Nonprofit Designation letter from the IRS (not a state form).
- The amount requested from Alcoa Foundation
- How the project meets the Warrick Operations Focus and/or one or more of AF's Areas of Excellence
- The community need(s) that will be addressed
- Planned objectives and activities, and who will benefit from them
- Specific metrics that will define the benefits of the project (activities, achievement of objectives, possible partnerships, outcomes/impacts on the community, etc.)
- How you plan to continue the project past the term of the grant
- In addition to the letter, you must include an official Project Budget - please use the document posted here. Using this form, please only itemize funding under personnel costs if the grant will pay for a portion of the person's time. All other project-based expenses should be itemized under the "Other Costs" section.
- Be sure that the letter includes all contact information including mailing address, phone and fax numbers and an E-mail address.
- No hand-deliveries please - applications should be postmarked no later than the 28th.
Before May 1, 2007: The Warrick Operations Community Advisory Board and plant management will review all information and determine which organizations will be recommended for funding to the Foundation. All organizations will be notified by this date regarding the outcome of their request.
The Foundation is permitted to fund only 501(c)(3) public charities, governmental entities or educational institutions listed in the Higher Education Directory. A 501(c)(3) designation is made by the IRS to describe various tax-exempt organizations.
ALCOA FOUNDATION DOES NOT CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING FOR FUNDING
- Individuals
- Organizations and programs designed to influence legislation or elect candidates to public office
- Sectarian or religious organizations whose services are limited to members of one religious group
- Religious programs
- Endowment funds, development campaigns, or funds directed towards deficit reduction or operating reserves
- Fundraising events or sponsorships (walk/runs, golf tournaments, sports teams, tickets, tables, benefits, raffles, souvenir programs, advertising, dinners, etc.)
- Trips, conferences, seminars, festivals, one-day events - unless they are part of an approved program activity
- Documentaries, videos or research projects/programs
- Indirect or overhead costs
- Private foundations
- Trust funds

Warrick Operations Accepting Foundation Applications
Warrick Operations is now accepting grant applications for 2007 funding from Alcoa Foundation. Though the process for applying is nearly identical to the one used last year, we continue to strengthen our focus and look for opportunities to make an even greater impact.
