Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa Lancaster 2004 Giving

Lancaster, January 11, 2005 -- Alcoa’s Lancaster facility and the Alcoa Foundation announced today a total of more than $107,000 has been given through grants and contributions in 2004 in support of twenty-two local community nonprofit organizations. Grants to Lancaster County nonprofit organizations were targeted to youth workplace skill development, programs promoting safe and healthy children and families, and environmental conservation and sustainability.

“We’re proud to support these important local organizations and for the work and involvement of our employees in the community,” said Roy Dirkmaat, director of operations at the Lancaster facility.

Here are a few of the major projects supported by Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation:
  • The Octoraro Watershed Association completed a pilot program established to spread the message of water conservation to Amish children through an Alcoa Foundation grant. A pamphlet explaining the benefits of water conservation was developed and distributed to students in the Amish schools. The association now plans to visit each Amish school in the area to present the information and provide each teacher and student with a tree to plant.
  • Support of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Boy Scouts of America, Learning for Life Program. The objective of this program is to enable young people to become responsible individuals by teaching positive character traits, career development, leadership and life skills so they can make moral choices and achieve their potential.
