Intalco's Greenhouse Gas Busters!

|
Potline employees at Alcoa Intalco Works in Ferndale, Washington recently shared their carbon footprint success story with State Representative David Upthegrove during a plant tour.
Rep. Upthegrove is chair of the House of Representatives' Ecology and Parks Committee and is an advocate of environmental stewardship.
Intalco Alcoans are making a dent in our carbon footprint by are driving down greenhouse gas emissions from operations. They have been achieving a steady decline in emission rates since 2007 and the plant continues to exceed emission reduction targets.
PFC emissions (converted to CO2 equivalents (CO2e) for the purpose of calculating greenhouse gas impacts) from the potlines are the largest contributor to Intalco's carbon footprint. And while the location has reduced emission rates by more than 2 million mtpy since 1990, opportunities for further reductions remain.
The reduction in CO2e emissions is just one indicator of a steady return to stability for Intalco following the restart of a second potline in 2007. A major focus on training, standardized work practices and addressing maintenance backlog issues has also resulted in improved production, current efficiency and safety performance in the potlines.
