Instilling Interest in the Environment

Alcoa Intalco Works in Ferndale, Washington, USA partnered with the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) to support 10 Environmental Conservation Internships in 2006 with students from four local colleges. Intalco invested a $20,000 Alcoa Foundation grant in the NSEA program to support the college students developing expertise in conservation and sustainability, workplace skills, education, and leadership in the field of environmental conservation. The interns will be trained, supervised and mentored by NSEA staff. Working with young adults from local colleges, the grant will support efforts to develop the community's workforce. NSEA training programs and an adaptive management model integrates on-the-job training opportunities throughout the year, promoting job readiness.
