Family makes Alcoa employee of choice

Ferndale resident Julia Orloff-Duffey is among the 170 new recruits to join the Alcoa Intalco Works team since the re-start announcement last year.

Julia, who started work at the smelter just five weeks ago, said strong family connections with the smelter led her to apply for the position.

"My father worked at the smelter as a millwright for about 37 years, my brother Jon has been working on site as an electrician for more than 12 years and my sister Maria worked on the summer crew while at college," she said.

"It was with this knowledge that I felt comfortable applying for the job."

Julia was born and raised in Bellingham and recently purchased a house in Ferndale with her fiancé.

Her father was a native Alaskan Aleut who moved to the area as a young man to study which led to employment at the smelter.

She said many family memories such as Easter egg hunts, summer picnics and special events were linked to the smelter's Totem Terrace.

"My dad's memorial service - a celebration of his life - was held at Totem Terrace, with many past and present smelter employees present."

Julia is undertaking training on the potlines and will play an integral part in the potline re-start. Prior to joining Alcoa she worked in the grocery industry and also worked in the family's commercial fishing business.
