Alcoa Foundation Awards $8,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters

Bellingham, WA: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Washington is pleased to announce a $8,000 contribution from Alcoa Foundation in support of the agency’s Community-Based mentoring programs. The Foundation donated more than $57,500 to local charities in 2002.

The Community-Based Mentoring Program is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program. It is designed to provide one-to-one mentoring services that are specifically tailored to the needs of the individual child. There are currently 125 active matches in the Community-Based Program with approximately 70 children on the waiting list. Community-Based Mentoring Program is ongoing and is active throughout the year. A child in the program commonly show gains across a wide spectrum including better social skills, improved relations with peers and adults, improved self-concept, and enhanced feelings of self worth.

“During difficult economic times the need for our services increases while needed funds become harder to raise. It is for these reasons that Alcoa Foundation’s gift is so special. Their gift will allow us to start addressing the number of kids who have been waiting patiently to be matched with a big brothers or a big sister,” commented Jim Boyle, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
